Merchants uses the crew slot. Read the automatic attack and active ability separately, then choose upgrades for the attack that actually connects along your route.

Build and upgrade choices
Check the upgrade workshop for the named branches, tiers and rarity effects. An active-ability upgrade does not automatically improve the normal automatic attack.
Choose a firing or collision angle that lets you leave after attacking. Develop the core damage source before spreading every upgrade across support equipment.
