Wanderburg Steam Deck and controls: setup and troubleshooting

EARLY ACCESS · SEPTEMBER 2026

Wanderburg supports mouse, keyboard and controller play. Start with the default setup, practise steering and ability access, and judge Steam Deck performance during a busy run. Controller support alone does not guarantee a particular frame rate or a Valve compatibility badge.

Controller or keyboard: choose by the driving test

Try the same short route with each input method: a wide turn around an obstacle, a boost-and-release, then an active ability while steering. Choose the setup that lets you maintain the route without looking away to find a button.

Controller movement can suit continuous steering, while keyboard bindings may suit players who prefer separate keys for abilities. Neither preference proves that one input is best for everyone. Read the current bindings in the game rather than applying an old demo layout.

Hotfix 0.9.8 added an alternative controller driving style. If turning feels awkward, compare the available driving styles on the same route before changing sensitivity or abandoning the controller.

Steam Deck: establish a usable baseline

  1. Install the current game update and start with the default compatibility configuration.
  2. For handheld play, check that the selected resolution is appropriate for the Deck’s 1280 × 800 screen, especially after using a dock or external monitor.
  3. Enable the Steam performance overlay and observe both a quiet area and a crowded battle. A smooth menu is not a gameplay benchmark.
  4. Change one available setting at a time and repeat a comparable scene. Keep the change only if it improves the problem you can see.

If the game cannot sustain your chosen frame-rate target during combat, try a lower cap available on your device and compare consistency. Avoid stacking several launch flags, compatibility overrides and graphics changes at once; it becomes difficult to identify what helped.

Hotfix 0.9.8 changed the graphics API mode and added launch choices for crash troubleshooting. Use the choices supplied with the installed game before copying a custom launch command. Keep track of the option that works so you can undo an unsuccessful change.

PC requirements and safe troubleshooting

The listed minimum PC configuration includes Windows 10 or higher, a 10th-generation Core i5, 4 GB RAM and a GTX 1660 Ti. These are a compatibility baseline, not a promise of the same frame rate on every machine or on Steam Deck.

If a launch problem persists, verify the installed game files through Steam and retest the unchanged setup. Record the game version, hardware, selected launch option and the point where it fails. Preserve saves; deleting a save folder is not a routine graphics fix.

Use an easy run to finish the setup

Once inputs and performance are comfortable, practise steering before committing to a collision build. Keep boost available for an exit, then activate one module at a time so you can learn its direction and cooldown.

Start with the first-run tutorial, compare mobile build options, or learn the Ram approach after the driving test feels reliable.
