Mine Layer is useful when enemies follow the ground behind your castle. Lay a route they can cross, keep enough distance to avoid contact and use the active minefield when a concentrated drop will affect the pursuit. Dropping mines on empty ground does little for the fight ahead of you.

Begin against a manageable pursuing enemy. Move along a clear route and see whether it crosses your drops. A straight or gentle turn is easier to evaluate than weaving through a crowded area. If enemies keep passing beside the mines, adjust the route before adding damage.
Keep looking ahead as well as behind. A mine-covered retreat is still a bad route if it ends at the map boundary or another large fortress. Leave room to change direction without turning back into the pursuing group.
Save the minefield for a useful pursuit
- Check the active cooldown and identify the group following you.
- Choose open ground where their approach can cross the area behind the castle.
- Use the active minefield, then continue moving instead of waiting inside the pressure.
- Check whether the mines connect and whether the pursuit thins out before committing to another encounter.
If the active is unavailable, rely on the automatic drops only within what they can handle. Do not deliberately gather a larger group just because the minefield will eventually return.
Choose between coverage and impact

The two More Mines records affect different attacks. Use the Mine Layer workshop to inspect the description, not just the repeated upgrade name. Keep Fire Mines and Ice Mines as separate choices rather than assuming you can obtain every listed effect together.
Pair mines with a different attack angle
Cannon can work the side of an encounter while mines cover a pursuit. Ram can provide a deliberate collision before you leave a pressured area. In either case, pick a main attack and use mines to address a specific weakness rather than spreading every upgrade evenly by habit.
For the next attempt, judge the mine component by successful crossings and safer exits. If nearly all your fights remain in front of the castle and nothing follows, change your positioning or reconsider whether a back-slot mine module solves the problem you have.
